Three years ago, AI answered questions. Last year, it drafted content. This year, it does work — booking, posting, reconciling, following up — while you supervise. That shift has a name: agentic development.
What is changing under the hood
- Standards won: MCP became the common language between agents and tools, donated to the Linux Foundation in December 2025, with every major AI company on board.
- Agents got memory: modern agents like Hermes remember your business across sessions and turn repeated jobs into reusable skills.
- Teams of agents: a supervisor agent now delegates to specialists — one researches, one writes, one checks — the way a small office divides work.
- Always-on hardware: agents increasingly live on a small always-on computer or server, not in a browser tab you forgot to keep open.
What it means for non-developers
The skill is moving from doing the work and writing code, to describing outcomes and checking results. The businesses that win the next few years will not be the ones with the most staff — they will be the ones whose agents are best connected, best trained, and best supervised.
What will not change
Judgement, taste, relationships and trust. Agents are tireless; they are not wise. The winning setup keeps humans exactly where humans matter — deciding, approving, and talking to customers like people.
Agentic development is not coming. For the price of a nice dinner a month, it is already rentable. The only question is whether your competitors connect first.
